Lithuania (officially the Republic of Lithuania) is a country in Northern Europe, the southernmost of the three Baltic states. Situated along the southeastern shore of the Baltic Sea (99 kilometer long), it shares borders with Latvia (588 km) to the north, Belarus (660 km) to the southeast, Poland (103 km), and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad (273 km) to the southwest. Across the Baltic Sea to the west lie Sweden and Denmark. Capital and largest city of Lithuania is Vilnius.
About Vilnius
Vilnius - capital of Lithuania, the largest and one of the oldest towns in Lithuania. The name was first mentioned in 1323, in the letters of Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas, in which he called for artisans, merchants and monks from Western Europe to come and settle in the capital.
Vilnius was formed as a center of tolerance, where people of different nationalities could live happily together - Poles, Belarusians, Russians, Germans, Jews and others. After the first Eastern Europe university was established in Vilnius 1579, town became largest city of culture and education in the region.
About Kaunas
Kaunas is Lithuania's second biggest city in the central part of the country, at the confluence of the two biggest rivers in country, Nemunas and Neris. City is an important industrial, transport, education and cultural center, the provisional capital. Kaunas is situated 100 km from Vilnius and 250 km from the port city of Klaipeda.
About Klaipeda
Klaipėda - the last ice free port in Baltic sea and the only port in Lithuania. From all centuries Klaipeda has been an important trade center: at the beginning of XII c. merchants used to visit Klaipeda. Town was officially established in 1252, after five years got granted Lübeck city rights.
A port city has a lot of resemblance of old architecture in the Nordic countries.
About Šiauliai
Siauliai are located in Northern part of Lithuania. It is fourth biggest city in the country. City counts its years from the victorious battle of the Sun, which was held in 1236. For centuries, the city devastated by numerous wars, plagues and fires. Only one architectural monument is still there - Renaissance St. Peter and Paul Cathedral. The church tower has unique sundial. On the second half of XVIII c. city started reforming its buildings and areas according to classical principles of architecture.
About Panevėžys
Panevezys is located on the river Nevezis coast. Town established at 1503. Panevezys development began in the economic and political stability on the XIX c. After II World War city has become a significant regional economic and cultural center of north of Lithuania.

About Alytus
Ethnographic capital of the region Dzukija.
At the end of XIX c. Alytus was turned into a fortress to defend town from intruders. The remains of the fortress still can be found in a forest, they are known as the Artillery barracks near the Įgulos Church and the Park with Saratov barracks.
